Black Family Support

For the African American community, our ancestors clearly understood the power and necessity of education. During enslavement in the United States, it was illegal for Black people to read or write, yet even under those oppressive conditions, the desire to learn never died. Once slavery ended, education became a cornerstone of advancement and empowerment.

As abolitionist Frederick Douglass famously declared:
“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”
“Knowledge makes a man unfit to be a slave.”
“To deny education to any people is one of the greatest crimes against human nature.”

At NBPA, we carry that legacy forward.

We recognize that the family unit is the foundation of every strong community. Parents and guardians play a critical role in both protecting and preparing their children for a successful educational journey. Whether in a two-parent household or a single-parent home, the consistent presence of support, guidance, and encouragement makes a lasting difference.

In the twenty-first century, education remains one of the most empowering tools our children can possess. NBPA is committed to supporting parents as they instill this value in their children. We encourage families to actively engage in their children’s education and to create a home environment that prioritizes learning.

Supportive Homes

A supportive home does not require wealth, connections, or a particular zip code. What matters most is the tone that is set, one that communicates that education is important, expected, and taken seriously. This includes:

  • Ensuring homework is completed
  • Maintaining consistent communication with teachers
  • Creating structure, discipline, and encouragement within the home
  • Reinforcing the value of education through words and actions

We Value Black Families

NBPA founder Augustus Corbett underscores this point in his book, Education Injustice: How Public Schools Fail African American Males, where he states that an unwholesome home can be “the single greatest threat to the moral, spiritual, psychological, economic and social development of African American boys in America.”

With this understanding, NBPA is committed to being a trusted partner for families. We come alongside parents to support, equip, and empower them as they prioritize, protect, and prepare their children to successfully navigate the American educational system.

Together, we can build stronger families, and through them, a stronger future for our community.
